Concrete combines cement, water, sand and coarse aggregate. Cement reacts with water through hydration, binding the aggregate as the concrete hardens.
Mix design
The proportions and admixtures depend on the project. Water reducers improve workability with less water. Accelerators and retarders change setting times. Air entrainment helps concrete resist freeze–thaw damage.
Strength & testing
Compressive strength is specified in megapascals (MPa). Use the project’s engineering specifications when ordering. Slump testing checks the consistency of fresh concrete.
Placement & curing
Hot and cold weather affect setting and curing. Plan the pour, protection and curing method with your contractor and supplier before delivery.
Colours & finishes
Options include integral colour, exposed aggregate, broom finishes, trowelled surfaces and stamped patterns. A concrete finisher can help select the finish and appropriate sealing products.
